This course will provide future lawyers with a foundation for understanding the global financial markets and the role that lawyers play in the financial markets. Topics covered will include the role of capital markets in fostering economic growth and development, the types and function of key financial markets products, the basic finance math concepts underlying financial markets products (no math background required!), the legal, regulatory and contractual framework for the financial markets, how disputes arise and are settled in the financial markets and the future of the financial markets, including important current issues and the impact of technology. The causes and implications of the 2007-2009 Global Financial Crisis will be discussed. The course will include many real world stories and illustrations from the instructor’s own experience as a lawyer, investment banker and consultant.
